AI for engineering drawings: what it really does
Short answer: “AI for drawings” is five different tasks, and each needs its own tool. AI can already build a 3D model from a finished drawing — if every dimension is then measured on the model. It can digitise a scan too — if it asks about unreadable spots instead of guessing. But no AI can yet draw a standards-compliant drawing “from a description”.
Pick the right tool for your task
Five tasks: what AI can really do
| Task | What’s on offer | What you get | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Draw a drawing from a description | A chat model (ChatGPT, Claude) writes DXF code; Zoo Text-to-CAD outputs STEP from text | A simple flat part or a turned part — yes. A standards-compliant drawing with views, sections, tolerances and a title block — no. Text-to-CAD quality drops sharply with complexity | not yet |
| A drawing from a 3D model | A built-in feature of SolidWorks, Fusion, KOMPAS: views are placed from the model automatically | This is not AI and has worked for years. Dimensions and standard drafting remain manual work — we found no ready AI feature for this | partly |
| 3D model from a drawing | “Image to 3D” generators; Backflip AI (Drawing to CAD, Fusion); AI with every dimension measured | An image generator gives a shape without dimensions. Backflip gives a model with a feature tree in minutes, but in an independent test on a complex drawing the mass was off and small holes were missing. With every dimension measured — 2 errors in 94 models | works |
| Digitise a scan or photo | A vectoriser traces the lines; AI reads the dimensions | A vectoriser doesn’t understand dimensions — they stay a picture. AI on scans: 1 error in 29 models, an unreadable digit comes as a question | works |
| Check a drawing | A chat model “find the errors”; building a model and measuring it | A chat model will notice a missing dimension, but may also make things up. The reliable way is to build a model and measure it: a contradiction shows up as a number | partly |
Tested on real drawings: where AI makes mistakes
A language model reads a drawing well and writes model code. But sometimes it mixes up where a dimension is measured from, or misses a note — and the model still looks right. Only measuring shows the error:
The takeaway is simple: what matters is not “which AI” but whether anyone checks the dimensions after it. A generator that doesn’t measure fails silently — and you find out at the machine. How the check works on one drawing, step by step, is in the article “3D model from a drawing: AI or an engineer”.
What you can get for free
- Chat models in free mode write DXF code for a simple part — for a laser-cut profile that can be enough, if you check the dimensions yourself.
- Text-to-CAD gives a few free generations a month — try it on a simple part.
- With us everything except the download is free: the model, the overlay on your drawing and the check of every dimension are visible before you pay. You pay $8–$25 only if the model fits.
A drawing from a photo
AI can read a phone photo of a drawing, but worse than a scan: perspective, glare, small digits. If the drawing is on paper, scan it. If you only have a photo, send it: you see the model and the check for free, and unreadable spots come as a question with a crop of the photo.

Questions and answers
Is there a free AI for engineering drawings?
Free chat models can write DXF code for a simple part, and Text-to-CAD gives a few free generations a month. With us everything except the download is free: you see the model from your drawing and the check of every dimension before you pay.
Can AI make a standards-compliant (ISO, ASME, GOST) drawing?
From a description — no: it can draw a simple flat part in code, but without a title block, sections or tolerances. The reliable path is a 3D model from a dimensioned sketch or drawing, and a proper drawing from that model.
Which AI makes a 3D model from a drawing?
“Image to 3D” generators give a shape without dimensions. Backflip AI (in Fusion) and our service build a model from the drawing dimensions; the difference is the check: we measure every dimension on the model and compare it with the drawing.
Can AI make a drawing from a photo?
Read it — yes, but worse than a scan: perspective and glare get in the way. Unreadable digits should come as a question, not a guess — that is how we work.
Can you trust dimensions made by AI?
Only if someone measured them. Without measuring, our early runs had an error in 30 models out of 77; with every dimension measured and a second checker — 2 out of 94.
